Inflatable Arch Sizes: How to Match Span to Your Event

“What size arch do I need?” is the question that decides whether your entrance looks like a landmark or an afterthought — and it’s the one most buyers get wrong. Order too narrow and the crowd bottlenecks under it; order too wide and you pay for material and blower capacity you never use. Arch span isn’t a cosmetic choice; it’s driven by how people (or vehicles) move through the opening and by the space you have to anchor it.

This guide breaks down how inflatable arch sizes are measured, the standard span ranges and what each one suits, and how to reason from your event to the right dimensions before you request a quote.

How inflatable arch size is measured

Three numbers describe almost any advertising arch, and mixing them up is the most common sizing mistake:

  • Overall width — the outside-to-outside measurement across both legs. This is the footprint you need to physically place the arch.
  • Clear span — the usable opening between the legs. This is what actually matters for foot traffic and vehicles, and it’s always smaller than the overall width because each inflated leg has real diameter (typically 0.6–1.2 m depending on arch size).
  • Height / clearance — ground to the underside of the arch crown. For pedestrians this is rarely a constraint; for vehicles it’s a hard limit.

When you specify a size, always state whether you mean overall width or clear span. Reputable factories quote both, but the number that protects your event is the clear span.

Standard span ranges and what they suit

These are the spans our inflatable arches are most often built to. Treat them as a starting point — custom widths in between are routine.

  • 4 m clear span — single-file pedestrian entrances, booth and marquee openings, small store fronts. Compact to ship and set up by one or two people.
  • 5–6 m — the workhorse size for shop openings, mall activations and event gates with steady foot traffic. Wide enough for two-way pedestrian flow.
  • 8 m — race start and finish lines, festival gates, and any opening where a dense crowd passes at once. This is the typical span for a runners’ arch.
  • 10 m — vehicle passage, dealership driveways and large venue gates. At this width you also need to confirm the crown height gives enough clearance underneath.
  • 12 m and above — highway spans, main-stage backdrops and hero entrances. These are usually reinforced or built as multi-leg structures rather than a single arch.

The round arch is the most flexible shape across all these spans; themed and banner shapes tend to sit in the 5–8 m band where the print area does the most work.

Matching span to your event: three steps

1. Start with the use, not the look. A pedestrian entrance and a truck gate can share the same banner design but need very different spans. Decide first whether people, runners or vehicles pass through — that sets your minimum clear span.

2. Add clearance, don’t cut it fine. For foot traffic, size the clear span to the busiest moment, not the average. A 6 m opening that feels generous at setup can choke when a race field or an opening-day crowd hits it. For vehicles, confirm both width and the height under the crown — allow headroom for vans and trucks, not just cars.

3. Check the site and the wind. The arch has to stand somewhere. Measure the anchor points on each side (grass takes ground stakes; hard standing needs water barrels or sandbags), and remember an inflatable arch is a sail. The bigger the span, the more anchoring and the more sensitive it is to gusts — a factor worth planning for on any exposed outdoor site. Air dancers make a good companion at the same entrance because they read from a distance while the arch frames the doorway; many buyers pair the arch with inflatable air dancers for exactly that reason.

Where custom sizing comes in

Standard spans cover most events, but custom sizing is straightforward and often the smarter buy:

  • Non-standard spans — need 7 m or 9 m? Widths between the standards are a normal custom order, not a special project.
  • Multi-leg structures — beyond roughly 12 m, a third or fourth leg keeps the crown stable instead of stretching a single arch past its comfortable span.
  • Print and material — arches are made from 0.55 mm PVC-coated tarpaulin with welded and stitched seams, printed full-colour OEM with UV-stable inks so the branding holds up outdoors. A continuous-run CE blower keeps the arch inflated throughout the event.
  • Lead time — custom-printed arches are typically produced within 7–15 working days after artwork approval, with a minimum order quantity of one for custom print.

If you’re organising a timed event specifically, our companion guide on inflatable start and finish arches covers branding zones, timing-gate placement and setup in more detail.

Get the right size quoted

The fastest way to land on the right span is to tell a factory what passes through the opening and where it stands — use, expected crowd or vehicle type, site surface and any height limit. Send that plus your logo, and you’ll get a size recommendation and a quote back rather than guessing from a size chart.
